Continuous foam flotation harvesting with enhanced drainage: Overcoming the recovery-enrichment paradox
نویسندگان
چکیده
Microalgae are promising sources of sustainable biofuels, however high harvesting and enriching costs hamper economic competitiveness. Foam flotation––a low-cost, low-energy adsorptive bubble separation technique––may bridge this gap, yet its efficiency adoption is compromised by a perceived trade-off (based on batch operation) between two key performance indicators: recovery percentage (R%) concentration factor (biomass enrichment ratio; CF). Previously, we challenged ‘recovery-enrichment paradox’ under continuous operation (R% 95, CF 173), but fell short expectation. Here, present redesign based the concepts process intensification, incorporating drainage riser, delivering concomitantly R% (91) (722), retaining low power consumption (0.052 kWh m−3 algae culture) with total suspended solids yield (14.6%). This compares very favorably other dewatering/harvesting techniques, overcoming paradox’. Our significant intensification foam flotation will accelerate advent economically microalgae derived biofuels.

The Effect of Superficial Feed Velocity on the Column Flotation Recovery in Comparison with the Conventional Flotation Cells
Flotation is the most important process for concentrating mineral ores. This process may occur in any vessel such as column flotation, which has been used widely during the last decade and the conventional flotation cells. The effect of superficial feed velocity on the copper recovery was investigated using pilot-scale column flotation of "Sarcheshmeh Capper Complex". The results were compa...
متن کاملFoam consolidation and drainage.
A theoretical model of foam as a consolidating continuum is proposed. The general model is applied to foam in a gravity settler. It is predicted that liquid drainage from foam in a gravity settler begins with a slow drainage stage. Next, a stage with faster drainage occurs where the drainage rate doubles compared to the initial stage. The experiments conducted within the framework of this work ...
متن کاملHarvesting of algae by froth flotation.
A highly efficient froth flotation procedure has been developed for harvesting algae from dilute suspensions. The method does not depend upon the addition of flotants. Harvesting is carried out in a long column containing the feed solution which is aerated from below. A stable column of foam is produced and harvested from a side arm near the top of the column. The cell concentration of the harv...
متن کاملEffective harvesting of microalgae by coagulation–flotation
This study developed a coagulation-flotation process for microalgae Chlorella sp. XJ-445 harvesting, which was composed of algal surface modification by combined use of Al3+ and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and followed dispersed bubble flotation. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the medium was firstly characterized and mainly consisted of hydrophilic low molecular weight molecules. T...
متن کاملImproved algal harvesting using suspended air flotation.
Current methods to remove algae from a liquid medium are energy intensive and expensive. This study characterized algae contained within a wastewater oxidation pond and sought to identify a more efficient harvesting technique. Analysis of oxidation pond wastewater revealed that algae, consisting primarily of Chlorella and Scenedesmus, composed approximately 80% of the solids inventory during th...
